Major John M. Griffiths is Chief, Security Forces Inspections, Headquarters Inspector General's Office, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia (Air Combat Command), and he recently completed assignment as Squadron Commander, 65 Security Forces Squadron, Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal (USAFE).
Major Griffiths was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on 5 July 1968 and attended Florida State University at Tallahassee, Florida. In April 1987 he enlisted in the Army Reserves. He completed Army Basic Training and Military Police School and reported to the 449th Military Police Company in Jacksonville, FL. As an enlisted soldier through the rank of Specialist-4 he supported his unit as a platoon member through Operation REFORGER and Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM. With encouragement from his unit commander, he enrolled in the Army Simultaneous Membership Program to become a commissioned officer. Through his college education, he enrolled in Army ROTC, first at the University of North Florida and later at Florida State University where he received his BachelorÂs Degree in Criminology and was commissioned as an Army 2Lt in 1992.
In 1993, Major Griffiths attended military training for the Military Police Officer Basic (MPOBC) diploma during which time he was awarded the German Armed Forces Achievement medal. Upon graduation, he relocated to South Florida where he earned a civilian certification as a Law Enforcement Basic Recruit. Subsequently, he obtained a position with the University Police Department, University of Florida, in Gainesville where he worked as a Patrol Officer until 1996.

ader, Major Griffiths was responsible for logistics coordination between the company, located in Tampa, FL, and the detachment, approx. 300 miles away in Jacksonville, FL. Following the detachmentÂs relocation in 1994, he took a position as Platoon Leader for the 320th MP CO where he greatly enhanced the tactical performance of his platoon. While serving at the 320th, Major Griffiths also accepted civilian employment as a Patrol Officer with the Clearwater Police Department, Clearwater, FL where he remained until his transfer from Army Reserves to Active Duty Air Force.
In 1998, he served as Rear Battle Officer for the 317th MP BN where he acted as Battalion Battle Captain for the Warfighter Exercise. He was then selected as Company Commander for the 810th MP CO and, as such, supervised the deployment of an element of his Unit for Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR in El Salvador. Major Griffiths successes as both a military and civilian police officer led him to choose a career in the US Air Force, where he accepted his first assignment as Assistant Operations Officer, 90th Security Forces Squadron, F. E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, WY. While stationed at F. E. Warren, Major Griffiths also served as the Security Forces Operations Officer for both the 400th Missile Squadron and the 790th Missile Security Forces Squadron, improving missile field operations under his supervision. Major Griffiths completed a successful assignment as the Chief of Security Forces in the 703d (formerly 752d) Munitions Support Squadron (MUNSS) at Volkel Air Base, the Netherlands with several mission achievements for Nuclear Surety Inspection. Major Griffiths is currently assigned to the 65 Security Forces Squadron, Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal.
Major Griffiths is married to the former Laura Young and together they have a daughter, Claudia.
